Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick

Parker and Broderick's first child is James Wilkie Broderick, and was born on October 28, 2002. He is named after his grandfather. His middle name is that of author Wilkie Collins, an author Broderick and Parker both mutually admire.

Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick made a frantic plane journey from New York to Ohio to be at the birth of their new twin girls, it was revealed today.

The couple raced across the clock to make it to the hospital on time after receiving a phone call to notify them that the babies would be born a few weeks early.

'They were incredibly anxious they were going to miss the birth.'

'Sarah Jessica and Matthew spent a very tense flight wondering if the girls would already be born by the time that they landed,' a friend of the couple is quoted as telling Grazia magazine.

Twins Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge are thought to have been delivered by Caesarean at East Ohio Regional Hospital with the proud couple on hand to be the first to hold them.

News of the pair's dramatic plane dash emerged as the first picture of the them with their week old daughters was released.

It looks as if the pair already have a devoted older brother, as the Sex And the City actress's son James Wilkie, six, is shown starting adoringly at Marion.

The photograph was taken in the couple's New York apartment yesterday.

Parker, 44, and her actor husband, 47, decided to explore surrogacy after they were unable to conceive naturally.

In April, they announced that surrogate Michelle Ross was pregnant.

She gave birth last Monday. Marion was born weighing 5lbs 11oz, while Tabitha weighed 6lbs.

'Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are delighted to announce the healthy arrival of their two daughters,' a spokesman for the couple told website Access Hollywood.

'Both Hodge and Elwell are family names on Parker's side. The babies are doing beautifully and the entire family is over the moon.'

The babies were born at the East Ohio Regional Hospital in the U.S. and a hospital spokesman said 'everything's good'.

The twins were delivered a few weeks ahead of schedule.

Last month, Parker told Access Hollywood that media attention surrounding the pregnancy had led to an invasion of the surrogate mother's privacy.

The actress, who is most famous for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, said she had been concerned for the woman 'and the safe delivery of our children'.
